VETS

Dr Ian Chard

MainPic

Ian graduated from the University of Sydney in 1969, he then worked in mixed country practice in NSW and Shepparton for several years before spending two years in small animal practice in England. He has been with the Doncaster Veterinary Hospital since 1975.

Ian believes small animal vets offer an invaluable service to the pet owning clients of their area, and has always felt with appropriate advice of choice of pet for the individual or family, basic preventative measures of vaccination, parasite control, proper nutrition, socialising and training, the suburban pet usually becomes an integral part of the modern family unit, providing many years of unconditional love and company.

He never ceases to be amazed and impressed by the many examples clients offer of how their pets have helped them in times of illness and other difficult family times.

In his spare time he enjoys golf, rugby union, red wine, an aged cross bred terrier dog and living in Melbourne with Dorothy, as adult children have flown the nest.

Dr Michael Walczak

MainPic

Michael graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1979, then worked in mixed practice in Mildura and Seymour. He returned to Melbourne in 1981 and worked at Monash Vet Clinic which specialized in greyhounds and movement disorders of show dogs. He has been at Doncaster Veterinary Hospital since 1985.

Michael is a great believer that children benefit from growing up with pets and following on from this, pets become good companions through our entire life. The human/pet bond can be as strong as family ties.

In recent years he has taken an interest in geriatrics. With improved nutrition and health care animals are living longer and we as veterinarians must make those latter years as comfortable as possible.

Michael is married to Debbie with 3 children (Claire, Christine and Mark), 1 dog - Molly the spoodle and Sophie the aged tabby cat. In his spare time he is a 'tragic' Melbourne AFL supporter, loves good food, wine and conversation, can't get enough time for golf and longs for lazy holidays and seafood at Noosa beach.

Dr Rebecca Francis

MainPic

Rebecca's biggest ambitions when she was young included a dream to hike in the Himalayas and to have her own cat. So far she has achieved only one of these - renting has caused feline ownership to remain elusive for now.

Rebecca studied veterinary science in Melbourne and then began practising in New Zealand's rugged and beautiful South Island. This gave her extensive opportunities to indulge her passion for mountains and the outdoors.

After two years caring for Dunedin's cat population (and the odd penguin) she worked and traveled in the UK. The highlights of this experience were marveling at the types of scenery, people and animals described in the James Herriot books that originally attracted her to veterinary work.

Now back in Melbourne she has completed locum work for several clinics in the Eastern suburbs, and is now happily and permanently settled as part of the Doncaster Veterinary Hospital team. As may be apparent she has a strong interest in feline medicine, as well as diagnostic imaging (xrays and ultrasound). The most satisfying part of her day, however, is the privilege of observing the strong bond between the pets and their owners passing through the clinic.
